xx, xy
2014
Embroidered thread
[1650m h x 350mm w]
xx, xy is a piece based on gender roles, which poses questions of how a person may view
gender. Is gender based purely on what we are born with, the label we call ourselves,
what clothes are expected to wear? Symbols of the double helix and general masculine
and feminine motifs are both asking: nature verses nurture? Do they work together? xx, xy is a playful consideration of these questions, a celebration of the complexity of every day humans.
Forget Me Not
2014
Embroidered thread
[1130mm h x 650mm w]
Forget Me Not was created in the memory of my mother and grandmother. Forget Me
Not’s grew in my grandmothers garden, and have always been a favourite flower of mine.
The floral motif is in the shape of a double helix, a reference to my own genealogy. The
wallpaper design is a tribute to the home, and what that may mean to the viewer, and
what it means to me.

Lavender
2014
Embroidered thread
[750mm h x 750mm w framed]
Lavender is based on the unproven notion that giving lavender oil to boys before they have reached puberty can alter hormones, sometimes promoting the growth of breast tissue, called gynecomastia. This will usually disappear within months of stopping use.
Tests have shown that lavender oils can promote the growth of the oestrogen hormone, and inhibit androgens, sex hormones that promote male characteristics and inhibit breast growth.

Tansy
2014
Embroidered thread
[750mm h x 750mm w framed]
Tansy is a work based on the dangers and benefits on the tansy flower. Tansy is thought to kill bacteria, cure migraines, help minimize seizures and joint pain, improve digestion, it
can calm nerves, and can be used as an insect repellant. However, it is poisonous to eat the flower, sometimes causing death. Tansy can also cause restlessness, vomiting, severe diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, tremors, kidney or liver damage, bleeding, and seizures. It has also been used widely for bringing on menstration and aborting unwanted pregnancies. Upon learning the vast contradictions of tansy, I wanted to illustrate that it is not only a beautiful weed.
